Fund raising can different forms, most common way being to provide a donation box. Famous or important temples, like Todaiji in Nara, apart from the usual donation box, attract donations by offering to buy roof tiles, allowing to write a message on it and using the tiles for restoring the temple roof. In Europe, there is a similar tradition of donations-churches in process of restoration or rebuilt sometimes have bronze bells donated to them by various patrons or, in rarer cases, can get one given as a sign of gratitude commemorating a historical event, like the Chernobyl bell (below, source 'XXI amzius') given to a church in Central Lithuania by the Ukrainian government remembering Lithuanians that helped after the Chernobyl incident. Similar as the roof tiles, the bells have the name of the person or institution donating it, the date and some sort of a message.
